Functional Braces for children

Functional Braces

Used to align the bite, treat TMJ symptoms, and regulate facial appearance, functional braces are a wonderful way to gift your child with a beautiful healthy smile.

More about the treatment with functional braces

Improving jaw alignment and realigning teeth for children aged 11 to 14 years

Functional braces are a removable type of brace, removed only for cleaning. They are worn over both the upper and lower teeth.

This type of treatment is often used to help patients improve jaw relationships, correcting problems such as temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ syndrome) whilst also treating misaligned teeth. Functional braces help to match up upper and lower teeth, improving the child’s ‘bite’ and regulating facial appearance.

Early expansion

Sometimes expanders will also be used to widen narrow jaws, preparing the mouth for the erupting adult teeth and helping to create space so these teeth can be accommodated in the arches.

Here at Moira Wong Orthodontics, we can fit a range of functional braces. Naturally, our clinicians will take the time to explain the advantages and treatment courses for all your options before we proceed.

Functional braces have the best results when fitted to girls aged 11-13 and boys aged 12-14. In more severe cases these are fitted from 8 years upwards.
